Travel vaccinations, immunisations, jab, boosters and health advice for travellers
We are a licensed centre for yellow fever vaccination by the World Health Organisation and authorised to immunise with all available vaccines.
Nevertheless, I am trying to reduce the vacccinations to what is really necessary.
The following list describes briefly when I see an indication to consider a respective vaccination or jab:
- Yellow Fever: Yellow fever is a rare infection but is required for visa permission by several countries due to its severity of the disease. Since there are few side effects from the yellow fever vaccine there is no reason to avoid this vaccination. Yellow fever is an often lethal disease and the vaccine is an effective protection against a yellow fever infection.
- Hepatitis B: Hepatitis B is very important in young adults due to sexual transmission. Hepatitis B is a severe and common disease in third world countries. Vaccination against hepatitis B is useful but not always needed for elderly travellers. Young people are generally at risk of acquiring hepatitis B
- Hepatitis A: Hepatitis A is a very common infection but small children do not suffer serious illness. Therefore hepatitis A is indicated in adults and teenagers only.
- Typhoid fever: Very rare in travellers. Too often given without a real necessity. Vaccine should be restricted to those who are really at risk. Injection more effective than oral immunisation.
- Cholera: even more rare in travellers than typhoid fever. Vaccine as with typhoid fever not 100% effective. Gives some protection against traveller's diarrhoea from Etec E.coli infections.
- Japanese Encephalitis: Common in endemic areas among local population but rarely with severe illness. Only to be considered for travellers under certain circumstances.
- Rabies: One of the most important vaccinations for travels to Asia, Africa and South America. Rabies needs 3 injections to be started at least 3 weeks before travelling. Rabies vaccination should be considered by every traveller since the disease is always fatal and rabies is on the increase. Children are especially vulnerable to acquiring rabies.
- Tetanus, Diphteria, Polio: should always be up to date. Please check!
- Chicken Pox: In my opinion in most cases unnecessary due to the harmless illness. One excemption is pregnancy in the last term.
- Humane Papilloma Virus: Still needs several years to be able to make a final judgement. Potentially useful for young people to reduce cervical cancer.
- Pneumococci and Influenza: Should be considered in elderly. Useful also in travellers with chronic illness or disabled patients.
- Encephalitis and Meningitis: Bacterial meningitis is not only in tropical countries prevalent and should therefore be given to all children and young people even though not protecting against all strains of menigococcal meningitis. Tick born encephalitis is indicated for all travellers to certain endemic areas.
