A trend not only among expatriats: Long term travelling and retiring abroad
There was never before a generation of retiring people fitter and healthier and more mobile than today. Even with the global economy crash and financial crisis, these relatively young pensioners have more assets and money to spend than the younger generations. They are staying in Spain or Portugal, Dubai or elsewhere over the winter and coming back home in the summer or travelling around the world. Often they possess property abroad and their only worry is their health. Often the health system in the new country of residence is not reliable and there are language problems. When it comes to health matters especially older people feel uncomfortable in a foreign country.
Having had years of experience with the English telephone triage system, I learned that it can be extremely re-assuring for patients to speak with a doctor on the phone in one's native language and receive some health advice. Many health problems can initially or exclusively be dealt with on the phone.
In most cases it is possible to evaluate the severity of a health problem and give appropriate advice to the traveller or accompanying person. By this patients avoid unnecessary delays and worries. We will make sure our patients will have access to the best available telephone advice service from everywhere in the world.
