Tick-borne infections: Borreliosis or lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, Babesiosis, South African Tick Bite Fever

Borreliosis or lyme disease is a tick borne infection that can have an acute or chronic outcome. In patients with borrelliosis we see a wide range of unspecific symptoms mainly affecting joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons as well as the skin. Also the nervous system can be affected. Borreliosis often developes undetected initially without acute symptoms and when discovered has already become a chronic illness.

A relatively recent treatment for chronic problems from borreliosis is offered in our clinic. This consists of infusion of anti-oxidative components, that protect the joints from free radical damage by chronic inflammation and infection from persistant microorganisms.

The relatively rare infections with FSME, Ehrliciosis and Babesiosis are difficult to diagnose and must be in the hand of experienced doctors due to the potential severity of these diseases.

South African Tick Bite fever is however a quite common condition and easy to diagnose and treat.

After a tick bite you should always ask a specialized doctor if there is a possibility of a transmission since some of the infections can only be transmitted under certain circumstances.
